Volvo is gearing up for the premiere of the EX30 which is scheduled for June 7, gradually giving us more information about the small electric SUV. Despite being the brand’s entry-level product, the EX30 will meet Volvo’s high standards of passive and active safety, staying true its long-time commitment.

The new model will come equipped with a generous ADAS kit as standard, including a door opening alert system designed to protect cyclists by alerting passengers with visual and audio cues if traffic is approaching. Citing data from Cycling UK, Volvo says that 60 cyclists are killed or seriously injured by car doors each year in the UK alone, something that could be avoided with the use of clever ADAS.

The “Safe Space Technology” ADAS will also include a sensor behind the steering wheel that will detect the driver’s eye and face movements around 13 times per second, checking if they are distracted, drowsy, or inattentive. Furthermore, the new intersection auto brake feature will do its best to prevent collisions when another car crosses the EX30’s path unexpectedly.

Besides the ADAS, Volvo paid a lot of attention to the EX30’s passive safety credentials endowing it with “state-of-the-art restraint technology” and “top-notch structural design”. More specifically the SUV will feature a strengthened safety cage, pillars, and roof, with high-strength steel protecting the battery integrity. Finally, in an event of a side impact, a new far-side airbag on the inside of the driver’s seat is designed to reduce head and thorax injuries.

While Volvo keeps teasing the EX30, we have already seen the entirety of its exterior design thanks to leaked patent drawings. The small SUV will be produced in China, most likely based on Geely’s SEA architecture, just like the similarly-sized Smart #1 and the Zeekr X, while offering different options for electric motors and battery packs. Volvo CEO Jim Rowan promised an affordable price, a decent range, and high quality for the new EX30 which will be offered through a subscription-based scheme with a three-month commitment set to attract a younger demographic.

We expect to learn more about the all-new Volvo EX30 as we move closer to its global debut which will coincide with the start of pre-orders in select markets.
