Not too long ago, Rimac made headlines when it set 23 performance records in a single day with the all-conquering Nevera and now it appears as though it is chasing an EV lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.

The very same Rimac Nevera that the Croatian firm used to set all kinds of accelerating world records, finished in black and green, was recently snapped lapping the famed German circuit. Given that the car appears to have been fitted with some new sensors and what could be some timing gear on the roof, it seems likely Rimac wants to see what it is capable of around the world’s most testing racetrack.

The current production EV lap record around the Nurburgring is held by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S with a time of 7:33.3. However, in May 2017, the Nio EP9 did lap the circuit in a blistering 6:45.9 but as far as we can tell, none of the 16 units apparently built for customers can actually be driven on the road. The fastest EV to ever lap the ‘Ring is the VW ID.R, doing so in just 6:05 back in June 2019.

A look at the Nevera’s spec sheet suggests that it should be able to dip below the 7-minute mark quite easily. After all, it has no less than four electric motors that combine to produce 1,914 hp and 1,741 lb-ft (2,360 Nm) of torque. Yes, the EV weighs some 5,070 lbs (2,300 kg) but it is said to hide its weight very well and if it can go around corners anything like it can accelerate in a straight line then the current lap record of 6:35.183 held by the Mercedes-AMG One across the lap’s 20.82 km configuration may be under serious threat.
