Rivian has opened up a retail space with a theater in a location that dates back to the 1930s.

In 1935, the building now known as the South Coast Theater opened as the New Lynn Theater at 160 South Coast Highway, just 15 miles from Rivian’s headquarters in Irvine. It was a functioning cinema until it closed in 2015. The automaker bought it in 2020 and it’ll serve as the 11th Rivian retail space and the largest by far spanning over 11,000 square feet.

That space includes a single theater screen with 129 seats. “It’s an honor for Rivian to be part of the Laguna Beach community as steward of the South Coast Theater in its next era,” said Tony Caravano, Senior Director of Experiential Marketing and Community Engagement at Rivian.

“The site has been a beacon of innovation, community and creativity throughout its history, and Rivian is ready to carry that legacy forward. We’re excited to deepen our connections with owners, fans and friends while making new ones as people get to know Rivian through our products, programming and experiences we have planned,” he continued.

In addition to an R1T pickup and R1S SUV models on display, retail shops with Rivian gear and goods from local artists will also be available. Equator Coffees serves as the on-site cafe.

Opening day is December 9th at 9 a.m. That same day Rivian will show a two-hour film about the Rebelle Rally at 10 a.m., and a film entitled “Rivian Presents: WILDLIFE” at 6 p.m.
