Ford is introducing a new option for Mustang buyers, aiming to enhance both the appearance and protection of their new cars. Beginning February 27, customers will have the choice to opt for a Matte Clear Film, giving the pony car a smooth, satin finish from directly from the factory.

While the Matte Clear Film option will eventually be accessible to nearly all Mustang buyers, initially, it will be exclusive to the EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse coupes. However, beginning in the fourth quarter of 2024, Mustang convertible buyers will also have the opportunity to opt for this feature.

However, owners who order the Matte Clear Film on the Mustang Dark Horse will have to give up the standard Hood Accent Stripe, and they won’t be allowed to order the Painted Racing Stripe option, either. On the plus side, for those who like a clean look, a graphics delete package will now be available as a standalone option for the high-performance model, when it is equipped with the Dark Horse Handling Package.

People who want the film also won’t be able to order the optional graphics package on the EcoBoost or GT models. Given the option’s apparent incompatibility with stripes, it might not come as a surprise that the only model it the Matte Clear Film will not be offered with is the 2024 Mustang California Special.

The option can be installed in combination with all available Mustang color options, and has been designed by PPG Industries. Ford claims that the film offers better protection than a vinyl wrap, and that it will be able to withstand the detergents used at both hand and touchless car washes, in addition to road salt, bug splatter, bird poop, and asphalt residue.

The protective film will come with the same three-year/36,000-mile (58,000 km) factory warranty as any other 2024 Mustang. Deliveries of models equipped with the Matte Clear Film will begin in June 2024.
