• Just 70 examples of the Speedtop will be built, each one rooted in the 8-Series platform.
  • All units were spoken for shortly after the car made its debut at the Villa d’Este Concours.
  • BMW’s M division now has the go-ahead to develop a limited-run model of its own.

In May, BMW rocked the world by unveiling the gorgeous Speedtop. In an era where it seems that almost every new Bimmer looks worse than the one it replaces, the Speedtop shows that when the firm’s designers have had a good night’s rest and some coffee, they can still craft some great designs. Given how good it looks, it should come as no surprise that there’s been plenty of demand for it.

In fact, during a recent earnings call, BMW chief executive Oliver Zipse confirmed that all 70 planned units of the Speedtop have been sold. According to him, they were “immediately sold out” after the car’s unveiling on the shores of Lake Como in May.

High Price, No Problem

BMW has not publicized the Speedtop’s price tag, but Zipse said each unit sold “in a never-before-achieved price range,” for the carmaker. According to BMW Blog, the car is believed to have started at around €500,000 (around $577,000), roughly in line with the related Skytop, itself limited to just 50 units worldwide.

Beneath the sultry skin of the Speedtop are the underpinnings of a BMW 8-Series. Power comes from the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 as the M8 Competition, pumping out an almighty 617 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm).

From the outside, the Speedtop may look like a four-seater, but it’s actually just a two-seater that the marque says has been crafted for “weekend getaways.” Found in the rear is a spectacular cargo area clad in plush leather with ambient lighting and a set of matching bags from Schedoni, an Italian firm.

What Comes Next?

Considering the sell-out success of the Speedtop, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that more high-priced limited-run models could be in the works. Just last month, the vice president of Customer, Brand, and Sales at BMW M, Sylvia Neubauer, confirmed that BMW M has been given the green light to build its own “small series” model in the vein of the Skytop and Speedtop.
