• Bentley will begin offering custom welcome light animations.
  • Customers can create eye-catching clips up to 11 seconds long.
  • The animations are made possible thanks to 415,800 tiny mirrors.

Bentley introduced animated welcome lights, known as light sculptures, on the Batur and now they’re taking things even further by offering bespoke animations. This means customers will eventually be able to create unique greetings that are up to 11 seconds long.

The automaker said the display will consist of two parts, with the first being an “introduction sequence when the door is first opened.” It will then show an animation that loops continuously.

Bentley and Mulliner showcased the possibilities on a recent collection celebrating Bucharest’s Romanian Athenaeum. It projected an image of the building onto the ground, which was surrounded by “dancing notes,” symbolizing music.

The possibilities are virtually endless as customers can let their imaginations run wild. As an example, Bentley noted animations could be a simple as a handwritten name or as advanced as a floating feather ‘falling’ to the ground.

The animations are a cool touch and they’re made possible thanks to advanced technology. As Bentley explained, the system has “three colored light sources projecting through five different lens and two prisms into a highly advanced 8mm² Digital Micromirror Device. The light signal is then focused through five further lenses, displaying the animation on the ground when the doors open.”

If that wasn’t complex enough, the aforementioned device consists of 415,800 tiny aluminum mirrors that move and enable the animations to take place. The mirrors are just 16 microns wide and each one delivers one pixel of animation.

While that’s just a brief overview of the technology, Bentley said offering bespoke animations bridges the “world of digital innovation and handcrafted luxury,” while also setting new standards in the automotive industry.
