• Mazda will reportedly end CX-3 and 2 production later this year.
  • A Vision X-Compact concept hints at a future Mazda2-style car.
  • The next CX-3 may become the CX-20 with chunkier SUV styling.

The current Mazda2 and CX-3 are starting to feel like marathoners who’ve lost interest in finishing the race. They’ve both been around since 2014, persisting through a stream of facelifts and model year tweaks that kept them just modern enough to stay relevant.

Still, every model eventually runs out of road, and for Mazda’s smallest offerings, that endpoint appears to be drawing near.

According to a report from Japanese outlet Creative Trend, which cites internal dealer documents, Mazda is planning to wind down production of both the Mazda2 and CX-3 within 2026. As far as timing goes, it makes sense. These are now the longest-serving models in the brand’s current lineup, and that kind of longevity rarely goes unnoticed, especially in segments that demand constant evolution.

More specifically, production of the CX-3 is expected to end in March, followed by the closely related Mazda2 in June. Until then, Mazda will continue accepting domestic orders until each model hits its final quota. After that point, any remaining inventory will be sold off while supplies last.

Will Mazda Replace the CX-3 and Mazda2?

Despite earlier speculation about the brand pulling out of the subcompact segment entirely, that scenario looks increasingly unlikely. Hiroshima seems to have other plans in motion.

Our best indication for a future Mazda2 is the Vision X-Compact Concept that debuted at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. The concept has a hatchback bodystyle with modern styling and AI-driven features inside.

Interestingly, the Vision X-Compact measures 10 inches (255 mm) shorter than the current Mazda2. If that footprint carries over to production, Mazda’s next entry-level model may shift down into the city car segment rather than remain a traditional supermini.

Either way, it could arrive by 2027 as the brand’s new gateway offering in global markets, though its diminutive size would effectively rule it out for the USA.

As for the CX-3, its performance in global markets has been solid enough to suggest that a replacement could be worth pursuing.

Mazda offered a glimpse at what might come next during an official presentation in Thailand earlier this year, where a pair of design sketches showed off a compact SUV with a wider stance and sharper proportions. The styling appeared to borrow cues from the latest CX-5.

This upcoming model may wear the CX-20 badge, though nothing has been confirmed. Its global rollout remains uncertain, but if it moves forward, it would likely target rivals like the Toyota Yaris Cross and a growing field of compact SUVs from competing brands
