• Stellantis has reportedly killed their plug-in hybrids in North America.
  • This dooms eco-friendly models from Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep.
  • The company will still offer hybrids, EVs and range-extended EVs.

Jeep was supposed to launch a Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid last year, but the model was quietly cancelled last fall. At the time, the automaker told suppliers the decision was due to evolving customer propulsion preferences and a reassessment of their product strategy.

This came as a surprise considering the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe were some of the most popular plug-in hybrids in America. However, things are becoming clearer today as Stellantis has reportedly killed all their plug-in hybrids in North America.

A spokesperson told The Drive, “With customer demand shifting, Stellantis will phase out plug‑in hybrid programs in North America beginning with the 2026 model year, and focus on more competitive electrified solutions, including hybrid and range‑extended vehicles where they best meet customer needs.”

This is a big change as it spells the end of the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe as well as the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. It also sounds like the Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrid is toast, which probably shouldn’t be much of a surprise considering the similar Alfa Romeo Tonale went gas-only for 2026.

Stellantis Quietly Kills Its Plug-In Hybrids In America

While Stellantis is effectively calling it quits on plug-in hybrids in North America, the reasoning likely extends beyond simple supply and demand. The plug-in hybrid Jeeps have been subject to multiple fire-related recalls and new models are being held back due to a stop sale order.

Needless to say, they’ve been a successful headache and it appears the company has had enough. That’s a bit of a bummer as the Wrangler 4xe had a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and an electric motor. This gave the model a combined output of 375 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) and an electric-only range of 22 miles (35 km).

That being said, Stellantis isn’t giving up on electrification. Quite the opposite as the redesigned Jeep Cherokee comes standard with a hybridized 1.6-liter turbo engine. The company is also working on range-extended versions of the Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500.
