• AMG SUV reveals production lights and hood in winter testing.
  • It rides on AMG.EA platform shared with electric GT sedan.
  • Power could exceed 1,000 hp using tri-motor electric setup.

AMG is rediscovering a love for V8s with cars like the limited edition Mythos CLE, but it’s most powerful cars will soon be far faster and they don’t need gas to prove it. This electric flagship SUV is one of them, and the images showing crucial production parts tell us we’re getting closer to showtime.

Our latest spy shots from northern Sweden show the big AMG GT SUV has shed some of the boxy camouflage seen on previous prototypes.

You can now clearly see the curvy hood shape, and this prototype is wearing its production lights. Those star-shape taillights will be about all most other drivers will see if the AMG’s driver decides to dip into its rumored four-figure power output.

Under the skin, this SUV shares plenty with the upcoming electric GT sedan, which was previewed by the GT XX concept last fall. Commonalities include styling elements, the AMG.EA electric platform and light, compact, energy-dense axial flux motors from Britain’s YASA, which Mercedes acquired a couple of years ago.

One Motor Up Front, Two At The Rear

Some reports suggest the range-topping, tri-motor versions could approach the 1,341 hp (1,360 PS / 1,000 kW) promised by the GT XX show car. That’s hypercar muscle wrapped in a family friendly body with room for four and their dog.

The 224 mph (460 km/h) GT XX Concept could also theoretically charge at more than 850 kW, which would add 249 miles (400 km) of range in just 5 minutes, though public chargers that fast don’t yet exist in Europe or the US.

Even though it’s an SUV, the proportions lean toward sleek performance crossover rather than boxy off roader. The stance is wide, the roofline is low, and everything about it says speed first, practicality second.

Direct rivals will include high-end versions of the electric Porsche Cayenne, BMW XM, and other high powered luxury SUVs. And while there will be no real V8 under the hood, AMG is reportedly working on synthesized V8 sounds to give drivers the emotional drama they expect.

Sedan Comes First

The SUV is expected to debut in 2027, a year after the sedan, and probably reach showrooms in 2028. By then, Porsche drivers may want to get used to the view of a some small star-shaped lights disappearing into the distance, possibly leaving a digital V8 soundtrack in their wake.
