• iOS 26.4 lets you stream video to your car display.
  • A built-in Apple TV app comes with the update.
  • ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude arrive as in-car apps.

A big update for Apple CarPlay is just around the corner, and it could change how drivers spend their downtime in the cabin. Not only will the new system, launching as part of iOS 26.4, include a range of AI features, but it will also introduce a video function, allowing drivers and passengers to watch their favorite TV shows and movies.

The new function is currently available to developers through the iOS 26.4 beta and was quietly mentioned on a developer page for CarPlay. A tech YouTuber was among the first to test this feature, and it is likely to resonate with Apple users.

To use it, Apple owners simply need to open a video on their smartphone and tap the AirPlay icon. That allows them to cast their display onto the car’s central screen. Importantly, this is not the only way to watch videos through CarPlay.

Apple TV App Arrives In CarPlay

It has also been revealed that a dedicated Apple TV app has been added, allowing users to access movies and shows directly from the streaming service. Drivers and passengers can use the video functions only while the car is parked. That limitation could make the feature especially useful for EV owners who might otherwise pass the time scrolling on their phones at a public charging station.

Expanding CarPlay With AI Tools

Adding video functionality isn’t all Apple has done in the latest version of iOS. The tech giant is also introducing AI chatbots powered by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. These chatbots will not be able to control vehicle functions like Siri. Instead, they will operate only through their respective apps.

It is not yet clear when the latest iOS will be ready, but it is expected to roll out in the spring. While Apple has included video functionality in the beta version, that does not guarantee it will reach customers in the final release. The feature could still be delayed if Apple decides it needs further refinement.
