• Striking P1800SE restomod will be capped at just five units annually.
  • Prices for the build are expected to start at €300,000 or $356,000.
  • P1800ES Shooting Brake can be fitted with a modern T5 turbo engine.

You might not have heard of Dutch firm Autoforma, but it has just made a compelling case that perfection in the restomod world is not the sole domain of Singer. The small outfit has taken the iconic Volvo P1800 Shooting Brake and reshaped it into something so cohesive and well judged that you wonder why Volvo never built it this way itself.

The project remains in its early stages and comes from Niels van Roij, the designer behind several distinctive coachbuilt efforts in recent years. Current plans call for up to five P1800ES Shooting Brake models per year, with prices starting at roughly €300,000 or $356,000.

While the original Volvo P1800 dates back to the 1960s, its design is still as beautiful as ever, and as it turns out, the Shooting Brake looks just as good as the coupe we’re most familiar with.

Modern Details With Period Respect

These detailed renderings from Autoforma show that the roof of the Swedish classic has been modified with a new integrated wing, and the body has been widened, giving it a much more aggressive stance on the road.

The front has also been updated with new black accents, including the grille, and updated LED lights. The black elements continue along the sides, including the wing mirrors and the window surrounds. Shoppers who prefer a more classic look can opt for chrome accents instead of black.

At the rear is the original massive window that swings open, providing access to the large storage area. Autoforma has also fitted modern LED taillights and developed new wheels for the Shooting Brake.

Three Personalities In One Platform

The company plans to offer three distinct versions of the P1800ES Shooting Brake: Forward Fashionista, Modern Marvel, and Heritage Heaven.

The Forward Fashionista will be the most extroverted, pairing the revised styling with a modern Volvo T5 five-cylinder turbo engine and upgraded brakes. The Modern Marvel and Heritage Heaven variants will adhere more closely to the original P1800’s design philosophy.

If Autoforma secures sufficient orders, it expects to require approximately 18 months to complete the first example.
