Having access to a dealership’s inventory might sound like a perk, the kind that comes with temptation baked in. One mechanic, however, took that freedom a step too far, ending up in handcuffs after a high-speed run in a Ferrari.
And that wasn’t even the strangest part. The Italian exotic was allegedly racing a silver Toyota Celica (…of all cars), whose driver now finds himself dealing with a far more serious legal headache involving ICE.
Let’s rewind to how this actually unfolded. A traffic enforcement unit from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Texas spotted a red Ferrari California T pushing its luck through heavy traffic on Interstate 45 last Friday. As a deputy moved in for a stop, he saw a silver Toyota Celica “accelerating and attempting to overtake the Ferrari”.

According to the police report, the unlikely pair tore through traffic at speed, darting between lanes with little regard for fellow road users. It didn’t last long. Both drivers were eventually pulled over and detained.
While racing a Ferrari in a Celica already sounds like a mismatch worth watching, the story quickly escalates. Officers soon discovered the California T wasn’t privately owned at all, but belonged to a local dealership where the 32-year-old behind the wheel worked as a mechanic.

The Toyota, which appears to have been modified, was driven by a 23-year-old Guatemalan citizen who remains in custody under an ICE detainer. When questioned, the Celica driver told police that after the Ferrari flew past him, “he wanted to drive fast too,” prompting him to give chase and attempt a race.
The outcome was as predictable as it was avoidable. Both drivers ended up in custody, leaving the mechanic to explain his extracurricular test drive to his employer, while the would-be street racer is likely reconsidering just how far those Fast & Furious impulses should go.
