- Ford CEO Jim Farley has given the pope an American-made Explorer.
- The hybrid features a black exterior and special interior accents.
- Farley said the pope “appreciated all the personal touches.”
In 2021, Ford created a one-off Bronco to support the Pope Francis Center in Detroit. Fast forward five years and the company has unveiled a customized Explorer for Pope Leo XIV.
While the Bronco is certainly cooler, the Explorer is a fitting choice as it’s built in Chicago and the latest pope was born in the city. The vehicle was a gift from Ford CEO Jim Farley and his wife, Lia, and the pontiff will reportedly use it at the Vatican.

The 2026 Explorer Platinum was personally delivered to the pope on February 28th by the Farleys. It features a black exterior with chrome accents as well as vanity plates saying “DA POPE” and “LEO XIV.”
Bigger changes occur inside as the crossover has two-tone leather seats featuring tags with the Chicago flag. The city’s skyline has also been embroidered into the center console lid as well as engraved into the door sill plates. They’re accompanied by St. Peter’s Basilica graphics and a revised audio system that’s capable of receiving European radio signals.
Power comes from a hybridized 3.3-liter V6 engine, which presumably produces 318 hp (237 kW / 322 PS). This is notable as the hybrid powertrain is no longer offered on the ‘regular’ Explorer and is instead limited to the Police Interceptor Utility.
Farley said the pope took a quick spin in the crossover and “appreciated all the personal touches.” The pontiff also expressed Chicago pride and blessed several rosaries to give to employees.
Interestingly enough, the Farley’s didn’t give the pope a European Explorer. That model would have made more sense, but it’s a warmed over Volkswagen ID.4 with unique styling and up to 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS).
