• Deputies say Clarke sped past a traffic stop at over 100 mph.
  • Police found kratom and a THC vape pen inside his Corvette.
  • Clarke faces felony fleeing and trafficking charges in Arkansas.

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke allegedly discovered the hard way that even a 1,064-hp Corvette ZR1 can’t outrun traffic, police radios, or a second deputy. According to authorities in Cross County, Arkansas, the 29-year-old NBA player was arrested Wednesday afternoon after deputies say he blasted past an unrelated traffic stop at more than 100 mph (160 km/h) in an Arctic White Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

The incident reportedly began on Highway 64 East near County Road 800. A deputy was already stopped on the side of the road conducting a traffic stop when the Corvette C8 flew past. Deputies say the car was traveling well into triple digits and weaving through traffic as it continued down the highway.

The deputy gave chase, but Clarke allegedly refused to stop. According to the arrest affidavit uncovered by CorvetteBlogger, authorities say he only pulled over after a second deputy joined the pursuit and slower traffic boxed the Corvette in. Unfortunately for Clarke, the trouble didn’t stop once the Corvette did.

Deputies searched the car and claim they found more than 200 grams of kratom stored in five plastic bags inside a blue duffel bag. Some reports say the stash amounted to more than 400 capsules labeled “100% pure Mitragyna speciosa.” Arkansas classifies kratom as a Schedule I controlled substance, even though it remains legal in many other states, including neighboring Tennessee.

Police also reported finding a THC vape pen containing liquid that allegedly tested positive for marijuana. Clarke was charged with improper passing, speeding, fleeing, possession of a controlled substance, and trafficking a controlled substance. The fleeing and trafficking charges are both felonies. His Corvette was impounded, and he was later released on a $25,000 bond. Hey, at least that’s better than getting introduced to the PIT maneuver by ASP.

The Memphis Grizzlies have not commented publicly beyond head coach Tuomas Iisalo saying he was aware of the situation but had “no comments.”
