Tesla isn’t the only company that overpromises and fails to deliver as in 2018, Ford said they were going “all-in on hybrids.” At the time, the Blue Oval stated this would result in eco-friendly versions of the Bronco, Escape, Explorer, Mustang, and F-150.
While we did end up getting a few of those, the Escape Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid recently died. Furthermore, the Explorer Hybrid is now limited to police officers and the Pope.

As for the Bronco and Mustang hybrids, they’re about as ‘real’ as the second-generation Tesla Roadster. However, that could very well change in the near future.
Ford CEO Jim Farley recently appeared on a podcast and said they’re seeing a “huge resurgence” in electrified vehicles such as hybrids and range-extended EVs. He added about 30 percent of F-150s are hybrids, while the Maverick hybrid is essentially in a league of its own.
He went on to say they’ll have an “all hybrid” lineup, which includes the Bronco. Farley then doubled down by saying “Everything you can buy at Ford will have a hybrid.” This implies Ford will actually follow through on what they promised nearly a decade ago.
Interestingly, the Mustang Hybrid was reportedly scrapped in 2022. However, reports emerged about prototypes hitting the streets three years later, so the model could potentially be closer to production than many people would assume.
Little is known about the upcoming hybrids, but Ford is pivoting away from its EV-focused strategy that has seen them burn through piles of cash with having little to show for it. That being said, the automaker is working on a range of affordable EVs including a pickup as well as a Tesla Model 3 and Model Y competitor. Farley also hasn’t been shy about plans for range-extended trucks and SUVs.
