• The white paint of certain Hondas is allegedly prone to peeling off.
  • Models listed in this lawsuit include the Odyssey, Pilot, Fit, and HR-V.
  • A judge dismissed the original lawsuit last year, but it’s been re-filed.

Honda is back under scrutiny in the United States, and the issue will sound familiar to anyone who has followed the brand over the past few years. After being sued in 2024 over white finishes that could flake and peel with unsettling ease, the automaker is once again heading to court over the same alleged defect.

In 2025, a judge dismissed the original case, but plaintiffs were allowed to revise and refile their claims. They’ve now done just that, arguing Honda has been aware of problems with its white paint since 2012. According to the filing, the finishes can peel, flake, bubble, and even delaminate well before they should.

The lawsuit claims at least five different Honda and Acura models are affected. These include 2013-present Acura MDXs in White Diamond Pearl, 2013-present Honda Odysseys in White Diamond Pearl or Taffeta White, 2013-present Honda Pilots in Taffeta White, 2013-present Honda Fits in White Orchid Pearl or Bellanova White, and 2013-present Honda HR-V models in White Orchid Pearl or Bellanova White.

How Long Has Honda Known About It?

The class action alleges that Honda intentionally concealed paint defects rather than warning customers when vehicles were first sold.

When the case was first dismissed, the judge sided with Honda, viewing peeling paint as a cosmetic issue that didn’t affect how the vehicles function. However, as part of the new case, the judge agrees with the plaintiffs that peeling paint can be more than a cosmetic issue, as it can affect the structural integrity of affected vehicles.

The court also pushed back on Honda’s argument that the claims fall outside the statute of limitations. Instead, the judge noted that the clock starts when owners first notice the paint failing, not when the vehicles originally left the showroom.
