• BMW has transformed an XM into a mobile DJ booth.
  • Model sports massive LCD display, lights, and four speakers.
  • There are even fog machines integrated into the wheel arches.

April Fool’s Day was a month ago, but that hasn’t stopped BMW from unveiling the XM Label Soundmachine. It’s a pricey crossover with a DJ stand mounted on top.

Created by apprentices from BMW’s Dingolfing plant, the one off-model features a chrome wrap as well as special graphics denoting it as “The Ultimate Sound Machine.” They’re joined by a roof-mounted platform, where artists can perform.

That’s just the tip of a very odd iceberg as the vehicle has been outfitted with four structural pillars, which support a canopy and a double-sided LED screen that measures over 64 square feet (6 square meters). They’re joined by fixed and moving stage lights as well as four speakers and four subwoofers from dBTechnologies.

The model features a Pioneer DJ setup, which consists of a DJM V10 mixer and two CDJ 3000X players. If that wasn’t enough, the XM has four fog machines integrated into the wheel arches.

BMW noted the crossover is “fully functional” and has a TÜV-approved top speed of 9.3 mph (15 km/h). They added the superstructure weighs approximately 3,086 lbs (1,400 kg), which brings the overall weight to roughly 6,173 lbs (2,800 kg).

That’s a far cry from the M3’s 3,840 lbs (1,742 kg), but the Soundmachine features a high-performance plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine, a 19.2 kWh battery pack, and an electric motor that is integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. This gives the crossover a combined output of 738 hp (550 kW / 748 PS) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque.

Besides being powerful, the plug-in hybrid system provides another benefit. Thanks to the beefy battery, the sound system, screen, and lights can be operated for up to an hour without any external power.

The XM Label Soundmachine quietly debuted at the Electric Mountain Festival in Sölden last month and recently turned up at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. It will also make an appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this summer.
