• BMW‘s new iX3 cleared the Polestar 4 with two fewer months on sale.
  • Strong demand prompted BMW to add a second shift at the iX3’s factory.
  • More than 50,000 orders came in before the second shift was added.

Packing an innovative design and BMW’s latest and greatest generation powertrain, the new iX3 is proving to be very popular. Indeed, it’s started the year in Europe so strongly that it helped drive an overall rise in sales across the premium midsize SUV segment.

BMW began European deliveries of the second-generation iX3 in March, six months after it was unveiled. According to figures from market researcher Dataforce, shared by Autonews, BMW had sold 10,299 examples by the end of April. That was enough to clear the Polestar 4, and its 8,925 sales, with the Polestar having a head start, being on sale for all four months, while the BMW only counted March and April.

In fact, the new iX3 even came close to outselling the Audi Q6 e-tron, which recorded 12,536 sales through the first four months of the year. The Audi is down 23 percent from the same period last year, and with momentum on its side, the Bimmer could pull ahead soon.

Demand Drives Production Push

The iX3’s closest rival, the electric Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology, also went on sale in March, though figures for it aren’t yet available. Mercedes boss Ola Kallenius has said order books are full through the end of the year, and the GLC continues to lead overall premium midsize SUV sales with 41,227 units, a figure that in all likelihood includes both combustion and electric models. Trailing it is the combustion BMW X3 with 28,389 sales from January through April.

Earlier this year, BMW revealed it had locked in more than 50,000 orders for the iX3. Due to the strong demand, it added a second shift at the plant in Debrecen in February. Deliveries will start in the US and across Asia in the coming months. BMW also points out that one in three iX3 buyers is new to the brand, never having owned a BMW before.
