The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just officially completed and published the results of its first-ever active frontal crash prevention test. It was a pretty large-scale program, involving no fewer than 74 vehicles from the 2013-2014 model years.
Based on the ratings they achieved, they were included into one of three categories: Superior, Advanced and Basic; only 7 vehicles were good and/or advanced enough to be rated Advanced.
All cars were put to the test at 12 mph (19 km/h) and 25 mph (40 km/h). According to a statement from IIHS: “Those rated Superior have autobrake and can avoid a crash or substantially reduce speeds in both tests. For an advanced rating a vehicle must have autobrake and avoid a crash or reduce speeds by at least 5 mph in 1 of 2 tests. To earn a basic rating, a vehicle must have a forward collision warning system that meets NHTSA performance criteria.”
The seven cars that did earn the maximum rating were the Cadillac ATS sedan and SRX SUV, the Mercedes C-Class, the Subaru Legacy and Outback, Volvo’s S60 and XC60. The other 67 cars rated and their respective marks can be found in the list below.
