Camouflaged prototypes of BMW‘s forthcoming 2-Series Coupe and Convertible cars are beginning to make more frequent appearances on public roads, something that suggests we may be edging a little bit closer to their unveiling.

After capturing the rag-top model earlier this week, our scoopsters stumbled upon the coupe model of the brand new 2-Series range, which replaces the same body styles of the first generation 1-Series, while using the platform and engines of the second-generation 1-Series hatchback.

BMW’s most affordable coupe model will grow in size and as a result, offer increased space for both passengers and their luggage. At the same time, the longer wheelbase and extended front and rear tracks improve the two-door model’s proportions.

If you take a look at the 1-Series hatchback’s more potent powerplants, you can get an idea of what engines will be available with the 2-Series Coupe and Convertible.

These will include 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline and diesel units, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. All-wheel drive is expected to be offered as an option for the first time, while a high-performance M2 model could be in the cards as well, given the success of the limited production 1 M Coupe.
