Thought the Bugatti Divo and its $5.8 million price is insane? That’s nothing compared to what the French automaker might have in store for March’s Geneva Motor Show.
Citing undisclosed sources, The Supercar Blog claims that Bugatti will unveil a one-off hypercar commissioned by none other than Ferdinand Piëch, the former chairman of the Volkswagen Group. The price? An eye-watering €16 million ($18.2 million.)
Bugatti is in the midst of celebrating its 110th anniversary and the one-off hypercar is supposed to headline its stand at the Geneva Motor Show and may be joined by the recently-revealed Chiron Sport 110 Ans Edition.
In all likelihood, the new model will be based on the Bugatti Chiron and, like the Divo, feature distinctive bodywork to justify the exorbitant price tag. For $18.2 million, we’d also expect to see some serious modifications made to the monstrous 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine to ensure it pumps out well in excess of 1500 PS.
What’s just as interesting about the car is the man who is said to have ordered it. While Ferdinand Piëch was the VW Group chairman for almost a decade, he unceremoniously resigned from the company in 2015 after a power struggle just months before dieselgate. However, he remained a powerful force at VW as he owned a 14.7 per cent stake in Porsche Automobil Holding SE which controls VW Group. In 2017, however, he sold his stake and is no longer involved with the company. If he did indeed commission this one-off Bugatti, he may have had to mend a few bridges at Volkswagen for the project to be given the green light.

Update: Bugatti head of communications Tim Bravo told us the following: “I’ve read those reports as well. As per company policy, however, we do not comment on rumors and speculations (there are plenty of those surrounding our brand I’ve come to find in the less than six months with Bugatti).”
