Volkswagen’s best-selling model, the Tiguan, is about to get its first mid-cycle refresh for the second generation.

The automaker promises significant updates inside and out, as signaled by this overly-enthusiastic sketch that announces its arrival. While the teaser image puts the spotlight on some very dynamic proportions, spy shots have shown the facelifted Tiguan won’t look anything like this.

In reality, the refreshed model will get remodeled front and rear ends courtesy of redesigned bumpers, headlights, taillights and grille. Inside, the biggest novelty will be the introduction of a new infotainment system. It will support over-the-air software updates while bringing the latest in-car connectivity and other technology features.

We do not know anything else about the cabin of the facelifted Tiguan, although it could also get a tweaked steering wheel and the usual trim and upholstery updates. Expect an improved build quality as well as an expanded list of available options.

The 2021 Tiguan will launch with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in Europe. Possibly dubbed the Tiguan GTE, it could share the PHEV system with the new Golf GTE, which boasts a peak output of 245 PS (242 HP / 180 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque from the 1.4-liter turbo-four and electric motor.

Sitting at the top of the range will be the Tiguan R, with its sporty body kit, re-tuned suspension, bigger brakes and a potent engine under the hood. The mill might be the same one used in the upcoming Golf R, which is rumored to pack over 300 HP from the 2.0-liter four-banger. The power will be directed to all four wheels via a DSG transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

The unveiling date is still unknown, but it should premiere in the coming months.
