Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has announced the company will offer an R1S with a max battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system.
Set to arrive this fall, Scaringe said the SUV will retain its seven-seat configuration and feature a powertrain combination that a lot of people wanted. The company didn’t go into many specifics, but said the model is expected to have 390 miles (628 km) of range.
That easily bests the current R1S quad motor with the large battery pack as it has an EPA range of up to 321 miles (517 km). The model is also slated to travel far further than the 260+ miles (418 km) projected for the R1S with the dual-motor all-wheel drive system and the standard battery pack.

In terms of performance, Rivian said the SUV will be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in as little as 3.5 seconds. That’s half a second slower than the quad motor variant, but the standard dual-motor model will be one second slower.
As you may recall, Rivian will offer two dual-motor all-wheel drive systems with the base unit producing a combined output of 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS) and allowing for a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of 4.5 seconds. Those looking to go faster will need to opt for the Dual+ system that develops approximately 700 hp (522 kW / 710 PS).
We can expect to learn more details closer to launch, but Rivian said they’ll provide existing pre-order holders with a chance to order the new variant instead.
