• Kia reveals 2027 K4 Sportswagon estate with global ambitions.
  • Wagon is slightly shorter than sedan but roomier and prettier.
  • Built in Mexico and coming to Europe with possible arrival in US.

Fresh from pulling the covers off its little K2 SUV this month, Kia is reminding us of how we used to haul stuff before high-riding utilities came along. Meet the K4 Sportswagon, a new estate version of the VW Golf-rivaling K4 that sits alongside the hatchback and sedan and leans hard into lingering European tastes for long roofs and big cargo bays.

We have already seen it testing thanks to our spy photographers, but now it’s official and confirmed for sale in Europe later this year. The Sportswagon is 15 mm (0.6 inches) shorter than the sedan, but 265 mm (10.4 in.) longer than the K4 hatch, all three riding on the same 2,720 mm (107.1 inches ) wheelbase that provides tons of rear legroom.

All three also display Kia’s Opposites United design language, but to our eyes the wagon is much easier on the eye than the controversially-styled sedan, if not quite as attractive as the hatch. Like its brothers the Sportswagon gets sharp lighting, an eye-catching D-pillar and hidden rear door handles. Go for the sporty-looking GT-Line version and you add blacked out trim and more aggressive bumpers.

How Practical is Practical?

Kia quotes luggage space with the seats up as 604 liters (21.33 cu-ft) which is a strong but not class-leading. Yes, it’s 166 liters (5.86 cu-ft) more than the hatch has, but a VW Golf Estate offers 611 litres (21.6 cu-ft) and a Skoda Octavia estate serves up 640 litres (22.6 cu-ft). And if we’re being picky, even the old Kia Ceed Sportswagon this car replaces in Europe delivered 625 liters (22.1 cu-ft).

Tech-Heavy

Inside, the K4 Sportswagon uses the same screen heavy layout as the hatch and sedan, with a panoramic display, wireless phone integration, a digital key and even streaming services baked into the infotainment system. It is more lounge than load lugger, which feels very on brand for Kia in 2026.

Power comes from a familiar mix of petrol and mild hybrid engines, starting with a 114 hp (115 PS) 1.0 T-GDI petrol engine with a six-speed manual transmission.

Go for the same engine with mild-hybrid tech and the power output doesn’t change but you do get the chance to swap out the manual ’box for a seven-speed DCT. A 1.6 T-GDI petrol engine upgrade  comes only with the DCT and a choice of 148 hp (150 PS) or 178 hp (180 PS), and Kia says a full hybrid comes later.

Will America get it?

So far the Sportswagon is confirmed for Europe, but we’re waiting to hear from Kia America whether this handsome Mexico-built load lugger is also heading for the US. Do you think it would sell?
