The national average price of a gallon of gasoline has been hovering around $4 for days, but it has now crossed that threshold for the first time since 2022. Americans are now paying an average of $4.018 per gallon, which is up from $2.982 a month ago.
More alarmingly, diesel prices have soared and are approaching their all-time high of $5.816 per gallon. While they still have a way to go to beat the record, the national average has shot up to $5.454 and that’s up $1.696 from a month ago.

This is particularly alarming as diesel is the life blood of the economy. This means that even if you don’t drive a diesel-powered vehicle, you’ll likely end up paying more for items that get transported on semis, ships, and trains.

The west has the highest prices for gasoline as California is averaging $5.887 per gallon. They’re followed by Hawaii at $5.452 and Washington at $5.346.
Gas prices in the central United States are surprisingly cheap as Oklahoma’s average is $3.272 per gallon. Iowa and Kansas follow closely behind at $3.282 and $3.288, respectively. Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas also have average prices below $3.70 per gallon.
Relief Is Nowhere In Sight
The White House’s chaotic messaging on the war continues as President Trump keeps saying a deal is close, while also threatening to escalate things. Just yesterday, he claimed the United States was in “serious discussions with a new, and more reasonable, regime” to end the war.
However, he said that if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately reopened, the United States will blow up and completely obliterate all of Iran’s electric plants and oil wells. He has also threaten to take Kharg island and implied he would destroy the country’s desalinization plants. The latter would likely cause a humanitarian crisis and turn even more citizens against America.
Only time will tell what happens, but even if the war end shortly, gas prices will likely remain elevated for the foreseeable future.
