- Porsche will stop building all combustion Macan models this summer.
- Strong demand means some gas Macan sales could continue into 2027.
- Replacement ICE and hybrid Macans are still at least two years away.
Porsche is getting ready to pull the plug on the gas-powered Macan, even though plenty of buyers still want one. That’s awkward, because its combustion replacement isn’t expected until 2028 at the earliest, leaving Porsche with a very uncomfortable gap in one of its most important model lines.
“Production will be stopped in summer 2026 and during the last month that we have, we [will] produce as much as we can,” Porsche CFO Jochen Breckner said on this week’s earnings call. “Of course, our capacity is one factor there, but that’s not limited. Supplier parts are the other issue,” he added.

That means production at Leipzig will end this summer, but sales won’t vanish overnight. Breckner said some markets could still see ICE Macan deliveries into 2027, though “a declining trend will then kick in” once fresh production stops, and obviously, buyers won’t be able to spec a car to their exact liking.
Porsche originally expected the electric Macan to take over from the gas version, and at first, that looked plausible, but demand has cooled, especially in the US, after $7,500 federal EV incentives ended last fall. In the first three months of this year, Porsche sold 8,079 examples of the Macan Electric, but 10,130 ICE Macans, despite the combustion version already being unavailable in Europe.
Breckner admitted there’s now “some pressure” on the electric Macan in the US, and knows the company needs to make as many Combustion versions as it can for North American fans before the tap is switched off. The CFO said demand for the combustion model in America remains strong, noting Porsche will send “as many ICE Macans in the United States as we can.”
Macan Is Key To Porsche’s Sales Success
The Macan hasn’t just been another Porsche. It’s been one of the brand’s biggest volume drivers for years, often doing the lion’s share of the sales work while pricier sports cars keep the image sharp. Losing that momentum, even temporarily, won’t be painless.
New ICE Macan Already Testing
Porsche has already accepted that it misread the market. A new combustion and hybrid Macan has reportedly been approved and will be based on the Audi Q5 platform, but it isn’t due until 2028. That leaves roughly two years where dealers must lean on remaining ICE stock, the Macan Electric, and other models.
The wider numbers show why Porsche is nervous. First-quarter deliveries fell nearly 15 percent, revenue for the automotive business slipped 5.6 percent, and operating profit sank by 23.8 percent. Porsche still says it’s prioritizing value over volume, especially in China, but having fewer Macans that people actually want to buy won’t make that job easier.
So the gas Macan is getting a farewell tour in the second half of this year. It’s just a shame that Porsche didn’t book the encore sooner.
