- Video shows a Mustang Mach 1 after a low-speed crash at Mecum Indy.
- Online claims blame a stuck throttle, but nothing is confirmed yet.
- Mecum is still investigating, but says there were no injuries at the event.
Car culture spans a wide spectrum. On one side are the people willing to spend absurd money preserving pristine classics, and on the other are the ones who can’t look away when the same machines get crumpled, crashed, or otherwise sent toward an unfortunate end.
At Mecum’s recent Indianapolis auction, those two corners of the automotive world briefly collided. And when it was over, one 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 rolled away worth considerably less than it was when it arrived.
A video making the rounds online appears to show a red classic Mustang after it crashed into a pole inside the auction venue during this past weekend’s Mecum Indy event. Predictably, social media immediately went into detective mode, with clips spreading across TikTok and enthusiasts trying to piece together what happened from a few chaotic seconds of footage. The clip offers a few unverified details, the most notable being that the throttle reportedly stuck and caused the crash.

The person behind the camera says they could hear the tires squealing. “I think he was on the brakes, he couldn’t control it, the throttle stuck,” he says in the short clip. We then get a chance to see the car as it’s towed off the show floor, and the damage is extensive.
The bumper, lighting, and hood are all smashed in badly. It appears as though the entire radiator assembly is several inches further back than it should be but at least in the short clip, there isn’t any fluid dripping out of the car.
We reached out to Mecum, and a spokesperson tells Carscoops the company is still investigating the incident but confirmed that everyone escaped injury. That’s great news considering just how badly this could’ve gone. If a stuck throttle really was the issue here, a pole might have prevented a far worse outcome from taking place. That’s especially true when we take into account how many attendees we see in the brief footage.
A loose Mustang in a crowd is a meme waiting to write itself. Thankfully, this didn’t turn into the darker versions of that.
