Traditionally, summer is Formula 1’s silly season – and the latest news to emerge is that Renault wants to sign Sergio Perez as early as possible.

As reported by Autosport, Perez stated that he could leave his current team, despite Force India’s team principal Vijay Mallya saying that a new deal had already been completed long ago.

The Mexican driver is thought to be unhappy with Mallya’s remarks, especially since all decisions regarding his future are made together with his sponsors. With that in mind, Perez’s financial supporters have already talked to Renault, believing that he could become a future world champion if he had strong manufacturer backing.

Despite Force India having a much stronger car this year than Renault, the young driver believes that won’t be the case forever and that he’s gone as far as he can with his current team, which in all likelihood won’t be able to provide him with a title-challenging car.

It’s also thought that if Renault confirmed him as its main driver for 2017, it could also bring in highly-rated reserve driver Esteban Ocon.

Despite Renault emerging as Perez’s main suitors, they still face competition from Williams, who also held discussions with the Mexican driver’s backers.
