Dutch navigation company TomTom has won a contract with Volvo to provide real-time navigation systems with live traffic data for their models.

Reuters reports that TomTom was competing with giants like Google Maps and HERE for the contract, signifying the deal as a major win for TomTom.

Mostly known for their dashboard-mounted GPS systems, TomTom has secured a series of contracts with automakers for its mapping technology. The navigation industry has become much more important for the industry, as they play a crucial role in the development and function of autonomous driving features.

TomTom has already signed deals with Volkswagen, Uber and Apple while Volvo is planning to test two fleets of 100 autonomous XC90s on public roads in Sweden and UK next year, followed by a third one in China.

Volvo’s goal is to offer a fully autonomous vehicle on the market by 2021, one that will rely solely on its onboard sensors and navigation system, instead of requiring any assistance from infrastructure.
