The BRAT, short for Bi-Drive Recreational All-Terrain Transporter, is what Subaru thought a pickup truck should have looked like in the 1970s. It thankfully got different names for different markets – it was actually six different names in total, including Brumby and Targa

It is a unique vehicle, not only based on the way it looks but also its trademark all-wheel drive system and for the American version the bed-mounted rear-facing jump seats.

Doug DeMuro did a video that promises to tell you “everything you need to know” about the Brat, even the reason why it came with the rather fun-looking extra seats.

The other model he says the BRAT was based on was called the Leone and it’s actually a predecessor for what became the Impreza. Therefor, the later Subaru Baja model, basically a Legacy with a bed, was actually bigger than it should have been to be a successor to the 1970s original.
