Skoda is showing off their all-wheel drive range in the compact and mid-size segment.
As deliveries of AWD Skoda vehicles have tripled between 2008 and 2015, the Czech manufacturer has stated that 17% of all Octavias, Yetis and Superbs (a total of ten 4×4 options) sold last year had power going to all four wheels. In total, there have been 503,900 4×4 vehicles delivered to customers since the first Octavia Combi 4×4 was released back in 1999.
The Octavia has no fewer than 5 AWD models within its lineup: Octavia 4×4, Octavia Combi 4×4, Octavia RS 4×4, Octavia Combi RS 4×4 and of course, the Octavia Scout. The Yeti has the second-most AWD versions, with the 4×4, Outdoor 4×4 and Monte Carlo 4×4, whereas the Superb comes in last with the Superb 4×4 and Superb Combi 4×4.
According to Skoda CEO Bernhard Maier, his company’s AWD range is “stronger than ever before.” He also added that these models “play an important role in ŠKODA’s success. From 2008 to 2015, we rapidly built up the brand’s presence in the 4×4 sector and the sales of our 4×4 models tripled. We are now preparing for the next phase of ŠKODA’s model campaign by expanding our SUV model range.”
In 2015 alone, Skoda sold 67,500 4×4 Yetis, Octavias and Superbs across the globe, while continuing to be a market leader within the all-wheel drive estate car class with the current Octavia Combi 4×4 and Superb Combi 4×4 in Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Poland, Spain and Finland.
At the core of their 4×4 model lineup is the electronically controlled multi-plate clutch technology, where the control unit constantly calculates the ideal power distribution between the front and rear axle, making loss of traction almost impossible. Of course, when you’re coasting or you’re at low load, the front axle does all the driving, which in turn saves fuel.
As the newest addition to the Skoda 4×4 lineup, the Superb flagship comes with a choice of the following engines: 1.4 TSI/150 PS, 2.0 TSI/280 PS, 2.0 TDI/150 PS and 2.0 TDI/190 PS. The strongest versions here offer a particularly excellent ride when combining the AWD with the automatic DSG transmission.
