As Infiniti moves forward in its attempt to be a serious player in the luxury car market, it has emerged that its market push will be spearheaded by a revolutionary new V6 engine.

Autocar says that this petrol-powered V6 engine will be the first of its kind to incorporate variable compression ratio technology to help it be as efficient as a regular diesel engine while offering the power and refinement of an advanced petrol engine.

In all probability, this engine will make its debut in a new crossover from the brand, possibly the next-generation QX50.

Tipped to hit the market in early 2018, this model will take design cues from the QX Sport Inspiration concept released earlier in the year at the Beijing Motor Show.

Beyond its refreshed design, the availability of this new V6 engine should help broaden the model’s appeal and make it a serious alternative to its German rivals. There’s a good chance that the new QX50 could also include autonomous driving technology.
