Images of a really aggressive BMW M4 tester arrived in our inbox, causing elevated heartbeat, increased sweating and several high-fives with strangers before we realize that this isn’t probably what we thought it is in the first place.

The M4 GTS test mule you see here was spotted near Nurburgring wearing a very noticeable aero costume, from that giant wing at the back, to the extended front spoiler, the deeper side sills and of course that huge, sharp rear diffuser.

While we would love to be the bearers of good news and report that BMW is going to give us an even faster version of the M4, our intel tells us that this isn’t going to happen and the GTS version will continue to be the car of choice if you want a faster M4.

What is this then? Well, BMW is known for working on the GT4 race version of the M4 and this prototype right here is probably out testing the new aero bits and suspension. GT4 cars are generally closer related to their production counterparts which means that the M4 GT4 will keep features like the carbon body panels.

The new race car will also retain the twin-turbo straight-six engine but chances are that it won’t offer GTS levels of power thanks to the racing regulations. The BMW M4 GT4 will join the M235i Racing and the M6 GT3 and will compete against cars like the Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4.
