Lexus Chief Engineer Boasts About The Cutting-Edge Safety Tech Of The 2018 LS

While the all-new 2018 Lexus LS will look and feel remarkably different compared to its predecessor, chief engineer Toshio Asahi claims there’s way more to it than meets the eye.

Asahi says that their new flagship model features three world-first safety technologies, starting with the new pre-crash auto-steering system, followed by an advanced head-up display with two new functions.

Unlike the current system, the new steering tech doesn’t just brake the car before a crash, it also automatically steers the LS around the obstacle, stated Asahi during an interview with Autonews.

The second advancement is in regards to the updated head-up display, which presents projected data on the windshield and also happens to be the world’s largest HUD system. This new version also warns of pedestrians ahead, while the pedestrian sensor system combines a stereo camera with millimeter-wave radar in order to improve performance at night.

Finally, the third new feature is an intersection blind-spot detection technology that alerts the driver to vehicles coming from either side. Ultimately, the driver is warned via the head-up display if there’s any dangerous oncoming traffic.

Lexus exec Jeff Bracken added that the LS will make a “strong safety statement” within its segment by bundling these new safety technologies with the Lexus Safety System + package and making them standard on all 2018 LS models.

despite unimpressive or cutting edge design of the exterior i am really drawn to this model. wish i had the cashola

    • pureworx

its actually a very impressive and cutting edge design compared to..
      The melted merc s class
The more of the same incremental update bmw 7 series
and finally the bland audi A8

        very true

Agreed. I’m slowly warming up to it. And dare I say, it looks beautiful from certain angles.

I can’t say the same about the new 7.

And sure Mercedes sedan looks great, but it’s basically same car in 100%, 90%, 80% scale.

Trust me this car won’t be denied in the flesh…Now I do want to see how that HUD looks.

What’s the MASSIVE black plastic thing stuck to the windshield behind the rear view mirror?

    • Sébastien

      housing for camera/sensor I presume
maybe a Dolby Atmos speaker 🙂

  • Craig

I’m really looking forward to seeing this in ‘person’. I admire the courage Lexus has shown design wise.

  • TheBelltower

Aside from the grotesque plastic prosthetic schnoz hanging off the front, the car is very conventional looking. The tech sounds interesting though. I really don’t know if I would want the car to steer the car in an emergency. I’d have to test out any car with that technology in a parking lot for hours before I ever trusted it in an everyday situation.

They ruined this thing and I say that as a bigger fan of Lexus than most. The interior is great and it will hopefully drive great too. Hopefully looks alot better in person because in pics its seems pretty awful, especially the way the window finishes in the rear which has a very Hyundai Azera quality to it. The whole thing looks like a bigger ES350 and somehow has front-drive car proportions, aka goofy and not elegant. Someone else mentioned the competitors are also pretty bland and I totally agree. But bold doesn’t have to equal incoherent design that looks like it came from some computer randomizer algorithm that slapped random angular shapes together.

Lexus took all the time in the world to redesign the LS but came up with this monstrosity? Ratso Rizo had a cuter car. This is so uninspiring and boring but I know the faithful will think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Someone kill it with fire please!

    • supermanuel

I’m not a Lexus ‘faithful’ Karl, never had one, but I think this is the exact opposite of uninspiring and boring.

    • Ary Wisesa

Nope, it’s the exact opposite of uninspiring and boring. It will sell like hotcakes.

  • Althea Later

It will be funny looking with a hole punched through the grille when a someone with a tow hitch backs into it on the street. Or will the whole grille get yanked off when the driver with tow hitch pulls away?

  • Braddo

    Wow. That’s ugly.

  • BGM

I’m gonna ask since nobody else has: *automatically steers the LS around an obstacle*?! So I see a crash coming and I had to wrestle control from the car? If I pull one way and the car wants to pull another, who wins? If someone is killed resulting from this tug of war, who’s at fault?

  • Six Thousand Times

My only thing is the missing V-8. I’m not insane about the grille but those are less noticeable in person.
