Lexus Chief Engineer Boasts About The Cutting-Edge Safety Tech Of The 2018 LS

While the all-new 2018 Lexus LS will look and feel remarkably different compared to its predecessor, chief engineer Toshio Asahi claims there’s way more to it than meets the eye.

Asahi says that their new flagship model features three world-first safety technologies, starting with the new pre-crash auto-steering system, followed by an advanced head-up display with two new functions.

Unlike the current system, the new steering tech doesn’t just brake the car before a crash, it also automatically steers the LS around the obstacle, stated Asahi during an interview with Autonews.

The second advancement is in regards to the updated head-up display, which presents projected data on the windshield and also happens to be the world’s largest HUD system. This new version also warns of pedestrians ahead, while the pedestrian sensor system combines a stereo camera with millimeter-wave radar in order to improve performance at night.

Finally, the third new feature is an intersection blind-spot detection technology that alerts the driver to vehicles coming from either side. Ultimately, the driver is warned via the head-up display if there’s any dangerous oncoming traffic.

Lexus exec Jeff Bracken added that the LS will make a “strong safety statement” within its segment by bundling these new safety technologies with the Lexus Safety System + package and making them standard on all 2018 LS models.

        Agreed. I’m slowly warming up to it. And dare I say, it looks beautiful from certain angles.

        I can’t say the same about the new 7.

        And sure Mercedes sedan looks great, but it’s basically same car in 100%, 90%, 80% scale.

    Aside from the grotesque plastic prosthetic schnoz hanging off the front, the car is very conventional looking. The tech sounds interesting though. I really don’t know if I would want the car to steer the car in an emergency. I’d have to test out any car with that technology in a parking lot for hours before I ever trusted it in an everyday situation.

    They ruined this thing and I say that as a bigger fan of Lexus than most. The interior is great and it will hopefully drive great too. Hopefully looks alot better in person because in pics its seems pretty awful, especially the way the window finishes in the rear which has a very Hyundai Azera quality to it. The whole thing looks like a bigger ES350 and somehow has front-drive car proportions, aka goofy and not elegant. Someone else mentioned the competitors are also pretty bland and I totally agree. But bold doesn’t have to equal incoherent design that looks like it came from some computer randomizer algorithm that slapped random angular shapes together.

    Lexus took all the time in the world to redesign the LS but came up with this monstrosity? Ratso Rizo had a cuter car. This is so uninspiring and boring but I know the faithful will think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Someone kill it with fire please!

    It will be funny looking with a hole punched through the grille when a someone with a tow hitch backs into it on the street. Or will the whole grille get yanked off when the driver with tow hitch pulls away?

    I’m gonna ask since nobody else has: *automatically steers the LS around an obstacle*?! So I see a crash coming and I had to wrestle control from the car? If I pull one way and the car wants to pull another, who wins? If someone is killed resulting from this tug of war, who’s at fault?
