2018 Acura RLX Breaks Cover With New Face And More Tech

Acura revealed the facelifted 2018 RLX flagship sedan, which now benefits from the brand’s latest design direction and a new suite of technologies.

The most obvious change happened at the front end, where the 2018 RLX now features Acura’s signature diamond pentagon grille and a more sculpted hood.

Other updates include the new wheel designs, the redesigned LED taillights, new dual exhaust tips and a gloss black rear diffuser.

Acura also claims they’ve further optimized the powertrain in the Sport Hybrid model and its Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive technology, based on lessons learned with the NSX. The system continues to produce a combined 377hp out of the combination of a direct-injected V6 with three electric motors.

Other hardware changes include the addition of a 10-speed automatic gearbox to the regular RLX, which is powered by a 310hp 3.5-liter V6. The new gearbox is said to offer more refinement as well as better performance.

The 2018 Acura RLX also comes equipped with the AcuraWatch suite of technologies, which now is enhanced with the addition of the Traffic Jam Assist, a first for Acura. Working together with the adaptive cruise control with Low Follow, the Traffic Jam Assist helps in keeping the vehicle in its lane and a set interval behind the car ahead in highly congested traffic situations.

Other standard features include a premium Krell Audio System, Surround View Camera, parking sensors, LED fog lights, remote engine start, ventilated and heated front seats, heated rear seats and steering wheel and more.

There are three new exterior colors also added to the RLX’s palette, including two premium paint finishes: Brilliant Red Metallic and Majestic Black Pearl. The cabin has been updated with better-quality materials and updated touchpoints, including a completely redesigned seat and a new Espresso interior option.

The 2018 Acura RLX will make its public debut at the Monterey Automotive Week, with sales set to start this November.

It looks better, but this won’t make this terribly overpriced, mediocre car sell any better. It would sell better with a price reduction and turbo V6 with like 400hp to go along with the trick AWD system.

    • bd

      Disagree and agree.

The front end looks a good bit worse and yes, it won’t sell any better.

    • TB

Agreed on both points…no way this car has ever been worth anywhere near 50K.

  • Jonathan Garcia

why do the front lights look like they have a magnifying glass over them.

    • SgtBeavis

      Because they do.

  • Bash

I like the interior, the rear lights looks interesting to me, but not so sure about the front!, maybe it will grow on me over time, but its not there yet.

    • AEE91

They should just transfer the 2018 accord interior. It looks more luxurious.

      • Bash

But then you see people complaining about how the RLX is just a more fancy accord… come on man, I see your point, but at least Honda went an extra mile with this one by having it with a different interior. Not a great one but a rather nice one.

        • AEE91

Well, if they had a competent exterior design, then most people wouldn’t really care if the interior “looks” like an accord.

    • Kash

the rear lights look better in person, at least they did on the pre-F/L model. the headlights look huge on the pre-F/L model and I think they got bigger.

    • T2X

Same here! Interior and the back side looks really good, but the Front… very ugly! I don’t like the Light and the Grill combination.

  • I’mCallingYouOut

A step in the right direction..

    • DM

Agree.. athough you really can’t settle for “a step” when they are trying to catch up to the competition that takes “a giant leap” every couple of years. Sorry Acura but you’re only good model is the MDX.

      • I’mCallingYouOut

Trust me, Acura is no where near the top of my list when it comes to my next vehicle.

  • DuDE

    Those headlights make me dizzy

    • Honda NSX-R

      The taillights make me dizzier.

  • Nordschleife

What’s so sad is that I didn’t hear anything about the refresh prior and never thought to be concerned if it was going to be restyled. It does look more distinct though.

  • botornot387

when i first glanced at the photo, i thought it was an amateur rendering… now you have to see ugly actually coming down the road. This is the definition of a face only a mother could love. Honda designers need to wake up.

    • Honda NSX-R

You won’t have to worry much about seeing this on the road, very few people buy RLXs anyway.

  • Wolverine350R

Acura finally had the shield/beak looking pretty good on the first TLX and the two SUVs and then they go and do this to all of them, sad.

  • ErnieB

I think it has an Ugly SUV interior(at least it would look nicer in an SUV..

  • Puddingpopper

    woof

  • Toronado_II

    I don’t like. Really don’t…

  • atomiccow

I can’t get away from thinking of a pregnant woman’s belly when I see that bulbous centre console design. It even awkwardly curves back in at the bottom.

  • SgtBeavis

It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s also not enough. They need to get a production version of the Precision Concept into the show rooms. I hope this is just a stop gap for Acura.

  • Shams Tabrez

    Ugly gets Uglier!!!
(I don’t how Acura think it can win people over 5 series, E-class or A6 with that hideous design)

  • Justin Spencer

Its a nice looking car but the interior dash needs work….looks a bit out of date compared to the sleek designs of its competitors.

  • gshemant

Front is ugly as sin. I actually liked later versions of the beak. Certainly looked more refined than this monstrosity. Just looks like a longer tlx now.

    • DM

I totally agree! I don’t know why the beak got so much hate. It was like a trademark. This new grill just looks like every other design out there.

  • Karl

So Acura’s idea of improving this monstrosity is to put more lipstick on the pig! I say dead on arrival… Poor Acura..

  • Waleesa1

The tail lamps remind me of those on the F01 BMW 7 Series. At the same time, it also reminds me of the current gen Lexus GS. Good-looking though (for its segment/class).

  • Tumbi Mtika

    Damn Acura.

Just trying to kill off any remaining goodwill we had left for you huh.
Let’s see how that will work out. It used to look like an Accord. Now it looks like an uglier Accord.

  • ediotsavant

Acura, we were joking. Bring back the Beak!

  • Bob

Omg. When is Acura going to make a decent flagship?? Jesus this thing is fugly

  • WELL IT’S INOFFENSIVE ENOUGH BUT DOESN’T LOOK TERRIBLY UPSCALE.

  • PK

Acura and Infiniti. Genesis’s off to a better start than you 2!!!!

  • MayTheBestCarWin05

    Awful. Acura. Just stop.

  • futures

I’ll let you guys know how it looks in person when I see the only one sold in my city six months from now…

  • DM

Is this the new Toyota Avalon redesign??? Or a bigger Accord?? Or is it a last gen LaCrosse?? Can’t tell.

  • Mark S

Acura needs to get serious or hang it up. Even most of the SUV’s in their segments are now better.

  • Rob Banks

Just horrible. I think I finally figured out why they put car bras on the front of vehicles during the early 90’s. Coming from someone who’s owned Tegs, a CL, an rsx-s and new TL — this is just upauling to look at. #ImissTheOldHondaWayOfDoingThings.

  • 31/12/2999

Just when I thought Lexus grilles are ugly, this make my day. Oh my God acura scare me.

  • Kash

You know, the beak worked on the RLX, the new grille, not so much, and can those headlights get any bigger?

  • The new headlights look ungainly but that hood cutline is pretty good.

  • ME

They’ve done a really nice job on this. I blame marketing for it not selling. It would be nice if the price was less but I think a special team of workers assemble these models in particular which might be why it is expensive, but you’re getting quality work.

  • klowik

    Front facia looks weird, awkward!!

  • john1168

The front of this thing is HIDEOUS! The rest of it seems ok and the interior looks comfortable.

  • Krisnadi Imam

they could have called it NSX Sedan… and that would completely nuke the image.

  • StrangerGP

    nice 7 Series taillights lol

  • nastinupe

I still wouldn’t buy it over the competition.

  • exeptor

Front lights kind make me feel a bit anxious. Really strange looking – like someone with a cheap blue contact lenses which make him/her looks like a doll. Rear are nice – some interpretation of BMW.

  • no25

I prefer the beak grille over this oversized diamond. The mesh within looks good, though. Headlights are way too big, and the rear end is too Lexus GS like with a little bit of BMW 7’s chrome bar. Also, whats up with these weird chrome pieces, Acura? I dont understand. Interior is still outdated as most Acura interiors are. I miss the old, old Acuras. The early 2000s Acuras. :/

  • Kax

    A bangle butt?!?!? In 2017!?!!?!

  • SteersUright

    Good grief…
Just hire some actual talent already! Clearly your design team struggles to produce a beautiful car, Acura. The interior of this thing is particularly bad for a flagship luxury sedan. Who would buy this highly reliable (I assume) atrocity only to hurt their eyes every day looking at it in the driveway?

  • PK

    fuxking ugly

  • Craig

I’m going to go it alone here it seems [nothing new there!] and say, “I like it!” A big improvement. Acura should have up’d the hp rating to over 400 though. A computer to help keep me out of traffic jams wouldn’t get me to buy one.

  • Craig

What I find most interesting is that Acura even bothered to update it. In the US – Acura sold only 64 RLX’s in July. 74 of them in June. And a whopping 110 of them in March – its best month so far this year. They sold only 1,478 2016 models. To put that into perceptive – Genesis sold 305 G90’s in July. Cadillac sold 890 CT6 models. And BMW sold 3,713 5-Series models.

  • DJ

so from the side. The drop on the front fender makes it look like my ILX from back to front. Or the new Chevy Cruze.

  • Six Thousand Times

It still won’t sell. Acura really needed an all new one.

  • d’Aforde

Instead of giving this car a makeover, Acura should have retired it and replaced it with a completely new model.

  • nastinupe

    I.hate.this.car.so.much!

It’s the reason why I jumped shipped and left Honda/ Acura for Audi. I had to make a choice between an RLX and an A7… and that was an easy one.

  • I like it

  • appleimmune

I think this is a fugly car..

  • This Acura RLX should break all the flagships because it is sleek, neatly designed sedan which can compete with BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C Class, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Accent and all the cars falling in this category.
well if you ever wanted to sell your old Acura cars or any other abandoned car sell it at Cash Car Removals Melbourne.
