Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio Smashes Nurburgring Record For SUVs

Lamborghini may be eyeing the Nurburgring crown for the world’s fastest SUV with the Urus, but for now, Alfa Romeo has captured that title with the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The halo version of the Stelvio lapped the ‘Green Hell’ in just 7 minutes and 51.7 seconds, posting the fastest time ever for a production SUV, smashing the previous record initially held by the 542hp Range Rover Sport SVR (8:14) before losing it to the previous generation 562hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (7:59.74).

It also matches the best lap time for the BMW M4, although it does fall behind the world’s fastest front-wheel drive model, the Honda Civic Type R (7:43.8).

“We specifically engineered and designed the Stelvio Quadrifoglio to set world-class benchmarks and it did not disappoint with a world-record Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes and 51.7 seconds,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Alfa Romeo. “We’re proud to now hold two Nürburgring lap time records with the Giulia Quadrifoglio as the fastest four-door production sedan and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio as the fastest production SUV.”

At the heart of the Stelvio Quadrofoglio beats a 2.9-liter twin-turbo intercooled V6 engine, producing 505 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque, that works together with the standard Q4 all-wheel-drive system allowing the SUV to hit 60mph (96km/h) in 3.9 seconds and top out at 177mph (285km/h).

Things are starting to heat up! I can’t wait to see that Jeep run it, even if FCA makes the fans pay again lol.

  • LWOAP

It’s kind of pointless as no one really cares for SUV records and all. Oh, well, enjoy it. It’s not like anyone is going to be hard pressed to beat Alfa anytime soon.

    • Bob

Do you have a reference/source to support the statement “no one really cares for SUV records and all”?

      • javier

People who speak in sweeping generalizations are not too smart, especially in this context of niche automobiles. Yes it is true that 99% of drivers don’t care about suv lap times but the target audience for this vehicle is by all means interested.

      • LWOAP

Sure I have a reference. It’s usually the lack of interest in setting records on the Nurburgring using SUVs. Notice in almost all cases manufacturers use sports cars. supercars, and hypercars for all record attempts despite the SUV craze going about. And yes, I know there isn’t as many performance oriented SUVs as there are sports cars, but they are out there. Why no attempts to set a record in any of them is most likely due to either a lack of funding – seems unlikely – or a lack of interest. I haven’t seen any automaker eager to set a lap record for SUVs.

Alright, granted, it’s not definitive proof. But it seems the most likely explanation.

  • Marc Gruben

Wow! With all that camo, I never would have known what kind of car this was. Thanks for telling me.

Seriously Alfa, why even bother with the camo? You should have let this thing rip the ‘Ring in Rosso Red.
