In a highly competitive market, Renault’s new Koleos SUV manages to separate itself from some of its rivals simply by being decent at everything it does.

According to Carbuyer’s James Batchelor, the new Koleos does just enough to step ahead of its Nissan X-Trail relative. He mentions that the Renault has a nicer interior, but that getting the tablet display is a must.

It’s also a spacious SUV, with plenty of storage space, charging ports, cup holders and generously-sized door pockets. Same can be said about the boot, which even has a flat loading area, although it’s not an easy reach if you’re carrying something heavy.

In regards to engine choice, Batchelor ends up recommending the smaller 1.6-liter dCi 130 diesel, over the more powerful 2.0-liter dCi 175. He says it’s less noisy and feels “a little bit more urgent”.

Overall, the Renault Koleos seems to have plenty of positives going for it, like good visibility, comfortable ride and comfortable seats. However, don’t expect it to feel exciting in any way.
