Renault Sport Chief Says An RS SUV Could Happen

Presenting the new generation Megane RS at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show has opened Renault’s appetite for further performance models.

One of them could be an SUV, the performance brand’s chief, Patrice Ratti, told AutoMarket, but developing it won’t be an easy task.

Ratti is aware that other car manufacturers are already offering hot versions of their SUVs, but that’s only because they have more funds to invest in such projects. As a result, besides the obvious money problem, Renault won’t develop such a vehicle unless it has the potential to offer that “RS thrill”.

Renault Sport’s boss didn’t rule out other RS cars either, admitting that besides an SUV, the diamond brand could also offer performance versions of sedans, if they turn out to be exciting to drive and profitable. An RS MPV is out of the question, though, Ratti said: “I don’t think that we will ever develop an RS minivan.”

During the same interview with the publication, Patrice Ratti admitted that the Sandero RS won’t come to Europe as a Dacia, because its 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine simply cannot meet the emission requirements.

He also dismissed a three-door version of the new Megane RS, which will be offered only as a five-door hatch.
