Lotus To Launch Two New Sports Cars In 2020

Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales has revealed the company will launch two new sports cars in 2020.

Speaking with Car Magazine, Gales reportedly confirmed one of the models will be a replacement for an existing vehicle. This means the car will be a successor to the Elise, Exige, or Evora. Gales has previously said the company was working on a new Elise for 2020 and it’s a likely candidate as the current model isn’t offered in the United States.

Gales didn’t say much about the car but he hinted it will use an updated version of the company’s bonded aluminum tub as “It’s still a benchmark for lightweight, crash resistance, and longevity.”

The second vehicle will reportedly be a track-focused model that will replace the 3-Eleven and use a new carbon fiber tub. Gales said the car will be “much more civilized” than 3-Eleven as that car is “pretty raw.”

Gales went on to say both models will be “absolutely stunning and gorgeous, in terms of design and aerodynamics.” He also said they will be more practical with improved entry and egress.

Both models are expected to borrow from the Volvo and Geely parts bin but Gales declined to say whether or not engines would be sourced from the companies. However, Gales did confirm the vehicles won’t use Volvo’s infotainment system as he doesn’t think it is suitable for use in sports cars.

Later down the road, Lotus will introduce its first crossover. Gales didn’t say much about the model but confirmed it will arrive in 2021 or 2022.

I don’t know, the 3 Eleven is a hard core track machine. I think the successor should follow the same formula. As for the second model? I’m guessing it’s an Evora replacement.

Speaking of which, it’s a safe bet to assume the Toyota engines are sticking around, right?

Well, we know one is the Elise replacement. And since the Exige is an Elise with a roof, its successor cannot be far behind. Volvo has a four cylinder engine available for the Elise but because the Evora is likely staying and it uses Toyota’s V-6, that motor likely stays put.

    • Yeah like 6k times said. The first model is Elise, which has soldier on for almost 20 years, they would like to make it lightweight though.

I’m quite surprised about 3-Eleven replacement would be all new model. Since that and prev gen 2-Eleven were derivative of Elise platform. Gales is quite fond of Evora so he probably want next gen Evora to be in place.

When you look at Lotus last 15 years its clear they struggle with the definition of “new car”.
Try a new platform that is not a longer-taller-wider version of the (1 and only) 20 year old platform you’ve been using.

Hopefully with Geely money but the Chinese aren’t keen sports car enthusiasts so no guarantees.

      • Yeah but they sure has appetite for it. With enough backing they can sell them in Chinese market a lot. Especially people there don’t have brand recognition towards sports car, they can market Lotus differently there.

So, someone talk me thru this please. when they say to launch by 2020… does that mean we should see it next year and to expect it to be available on dealership lots as 2020 model?

    • We haven’t see any mules yet but I guess they meant 2020 as launching date, and the car would be on sale from 2021 onwards. (Not using American style year model)
