990 HP Mercedes SLS AMG Plows Through Grass During A Drag Race

The Mercedes-AMG GT might have been out of production for four years, with Stuttgart making the lesser GT its top sports car, but it remains an incredibly capable, and popular, supercar.

It’s therefore no surprise that different examples keep popping up in our news feed. And they’re either for sale, terrorizing bystanders with their loud aftermarket exhausts or drag racing.

This particular SLS AMG falls in the last category and features an ECU upgrade, turbochargers, tuned gearbox and others work carried out by GAD Motors. The result is 990 horsepower, which, on a good day, allows it to run the 1/2-mile (804 meters) at 300.73km/h (186.86mph).

Said car was filmed recently during a Race1000 event in Germany. Unleashed against the clock, it eventually met a very potent Jeep Grand Cherokee at the start line.

However, things didn’t exactly go as the owner of the SLS expected, as right after the drag race started, something went very, very bad. The SLS AMG can be seen veering off the road suddenly, going off the runway and coming to a full stop on the grass.

It’s hard to tell what exactly led to this outcome, but it probably was a technical fault. Luckily, nobody was injured, not even the expensive ride, but it’s going to need to pay a visit to the doctor for a proper inspection – and, of course, to find out, and fix, whatever it was that caused this incident.

Something is wrong with the differential. I don’t know if it’s an E-diff, which could be a software issue, or simply a limited slip which just like the E-diff. could easily break under the twist of what is probably over 1000 lb.ft. of torque. You can see it malfunctioning after they back the car onto the runway again and it goes out for a shakedown.

I used to work as a mechanic, and I would definitely say that German cars are both the least reliable (particularly from VW group) and the most difficult to work on. My dad has a 2007 BMW 330i, and it has been pretty good, but is also fairly low mileage. My step-mom’s 2002 Mercedes S500 has been really troublesome though. They have had to replace the whole COMMAND system in the car twice, and that has nothing to do with maintenance. It was fairly early on, in the car’s first 5 years the first time. It is pretty bad, as everything is controlled through the screen, from HVAC to NAV to stereo. When it goes out, the car is almost unusable. And it is not just electronics. The under hood weatherstripping is all falling apart, the headlights are yellowed, a lot of plastic bits have dried out and cracked, interior panels in the car squeak and creak or the seats do when you adjust them. They always maintain their cars very well, but that Mercedes proves that this is more than merely myth. The myth, IMO, is that expensive means quality, which is definitely not always the case. I’m sure Ferrari owners can expound on that one.
