Toyota USA To Replace Heroic Nurse’s Charred Tundra After He Drove Through Californian Fires

As California’s wild fires continue to devastate, the story of a heroic nurse has come to light and attracted the attention of Toyota.

The New York Times reports that nurse Allyn Pierce risked his own life to speed through the fire to get to a hospital to care for his patients and ensure they were evacuated safely. Images of Pierce’s Toyota Tundra reveal how close he came to disaster.

Much of the pickup’s sides were badly scorched by the flames and many plastic parts melted, including the wing mirrors and parts of the front bumper.

As the fire in California’s Paradise area was burning, Pierce held his coat against the pickup’s side window to insulate himself from the heat. He even recorded a goodbye message to his family on his phone shortly before a bulldozer cleared a path for him and allowed him to escape the inferno.

“I was like, ‘I think I’m done. I just kept thinking, ‘I’m going to die in melting plastic,’” Pierce told The New York Times.

Shortly after Pierce posted a picture of his scorched Tundra on Instagram, Toyota USA was quick to reach out to him and offer him a replacement.

“We are humbled you’d risk your life and Toyota Tundra to drive people to safety. Don’t worry about your truck, we’re honored to get you a new one,” the automaker commented.

Pierce was particularly proud of his Tundra and had spent a considerable amount of money modifying it. Well, it’s hard to think of anyone more deserving of a free new ride.

That’s nice of Toyota to do that for that nurse.

  • Anton Yuri Calderon

So, am I missing something, or is the Bulldozer operator the real hero here??

    • kimbentsen

Caterpillar has reached out and offered a new bulldozer.

      • Anton Yuri Calderon

Nice!!! I’d rather have the Cat vs the toyota.

  • Honda NSX-R

Thank you Toyota for honoring this good man.

    • Knotmyrealname

I agree, and it’s the right outcome.
If he would have claimed it on insurance, the only thanks he would have gotten would be for his premiums to go up.

  • Big Black Duck

This guys a hero…his truck needs a cape

  • Perry F. Bruns

Bottom line: Mr. Allyn Pierce and this Toyota Tundra are both built tough.

    • TheAmerican

      But… a nurse?

      • ChrisInIL

        What a profoundly ignorant statement.

I’m sure you’re quite proud of yourself.

        • TheAmerican

It was a joke but okay.

          • ChrisInIL

You think you’re funny, but OK.

      • Perry F. Bruns

I worked in billing at a hospital emergency department. Nurses kick ass.

      • Ben

You severely underestimate what nurses contribute to a hospital or facility. They are the heart beat and hands of nearly any medical institution.

      • Keys D

meet the fockers i get it

  • john1168

This is great to hear! 🙂

Those tires held up well to the heat considering how the rest of the vehicle looks.

  • Abu Sayyaff

Nurse’s not Norris’s … excuse my English, why Chuck Norris came to my mind !!

  • General. Koofta

nice story! brought a tear to my eye for human kindness and altruism

  • Paul

How slow was he going to scorch it like that?

    • Jay

Going fast would increase the heat and possibly cath itself on fire. Also going fast through flames with hardly any visibility isn’t a good either.

  • Seats & a steering wheel

Lucky he wasn’t in a Prius or some other trendy electric toy car preferred by many Californians, they’d be goners for sure.
