The BMW M2 Competition has been proclaimed a more engaging drive than the M3. And it seems that, in the right hands, it’s also quicker around a circuit than its more expensive, and poweful, sibling.

As it turns out, the M2 proved to be just a little bit faster than the M3 at the Magny-Cours track with pro racing driver Romain Monti at the helm. The sports coupe lapped the track located in central France in just 1:59.78, on Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

That lap time is better than the one posted by the BMW M3 Competition and Porsche 718 Cayman S, both of which managed an identical 1:59.80. The Audi TT RS Mk2 is next, followed by the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe and Chevrolet Camaro V8, with 1:59.82, 2:02.20 and 2:02.50, respectively. The previous iteration BMW M2 was also subjected to a timed lap of the French track, and did it in 2:03.20.

As for the unofficial record holder at Magny-Cours, that would be the Ferrari 488 Pista, which turned out to be quicker than some of its direct rivals. The Italian supercar posted a 1:16.06 lap time, followed by the McLaren 720S, Lamborghini Huracan Performante and Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

The video that follows shows the M2 Competition on the track from the driver’s point of view, which makes for an interesting clip.
