A company out of the United States called Smyth Performance is working on a pickup truck conversion for the first-generation New Beetle.

Only a single image of the ongoing project has been published on the company’s Facebook page but it reveals that the Beetle pickup will retain the same cute looks as a standard model but benefit from the added practicality of a pickup bed.

The front half of Smyth Performance’s VW Beetle pickup looks relatively stock but things alter drastically from the doors back. Instead of a sloping roofline that arches back to the rear decklid, the Beetle pickup features a vertical rear window that makes way for a spacious pickup bed. Bulging rear wheel arches are also found, making the vehicle feel as if it could be a car which VW itself built.

Who knew a VW Beetle could be practical

For VW Beetle enthusiasts looking for some added practicality, a Beetle pickup might be the perfect tool for the job.

Smyth Performance has announced it will start accepting refundable $500 deposits for the first 100 Beetle pickup truck kits it plans on producing. Placing a deposit means customers will get the entire kit for $2750 rather than the regular price of $3490. That’s not chump change but considering how much work is done creating the custom Beetle, it seems reasonable. The company also offers pickup truck conversion kits for the Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, Audi A4, Dodge Charger, and Subaru Impreza.

Smyth Performance was founded by Mark Smith, the man also responsible for creating Factory Five Racing and Local Motors. Customers can, therefore, expect high-quality work, making the Beetle pickup all the more tempting.
