A 2006 Ford GT has just hit a top speed of 300.4 mph (483.44 km/h) in a single mile (1.6 km), making history in the process.

Car manufacturers such as Koenigsegg and Hennessey intend on taking their Jesko and Venom F5 hypercars to the 300 mph mark, but M2K Motorsports has got there before either of them.

The tuning company has been running its customized Ford GT at drag racing events throughout the United States for a number of years and in 2017, the same car reached a then-record of 293.6 mph (472.5 km/h) in the standing mile.

Thanks to a huge list of modifications, M2K Motorsports has managed to extract approximately 2500 hp from the GT’s 5.4-liter supercharged V8 and, impressively, the car still remains street-legal in the United States. It is also able to hit 300 mph with relative ease, sprinting down the quarter mile at a remarkable 174.5 mph (280.8 km/h) and hitting 240 mph (386 km/h) in just half a mile. If the runway was long enough, we presume that it would have recorded an even higher speed, as long as its aerodynamics ensured it remained stuck to the tarmac.

While Bugatti was once the king of production car top speeds, it no longer appears interested in chasing blistering v-maxes and has said that a top speed run for the Chiron isn’t even on the agenda. This means Koenigsegg and Hennessey may be the only two to duke it out with stock models in the battle to the 300 mph mark.
