The Black Series moniker is about to make a comeback in Mercedes’ portfolio, and it will be used on the range-topping version of the Mercedes-AMG GT family.

It was already confirmed by AMG boss Tobias Moers last year shortly after the unveiling of the AMG GT R Pro, who simply said “yep” when asked whether the model is indeed coming.

Now, we can’t be entirely certain that this prototype spied testing at the Nurburgring is indeed the AMG GT R Black Series, but it does seem different than both the GT R and GT R Pro. The slightly updated aero pack is partially visible from beneath the camouflage and appears to feature reworked front and rear bumpers, a new front apron, rear wing, diffuser and revised exhaust system.

We only get to hear the engine tone for a few precious seconds, but all GTs utilize the company’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, in different stages of tuning. The most powerful is, surprisingly, not powering the two-door coupe but the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe S, pushing out 640 PS (630 hp / 470 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque.

If you don’t have 13+ minutes to spare, then you will want to check out the video from the 7:01 mark, as that’s when the camouflaged AMG GT makes a brief appearance. Elsewhere, you will see other prototypes from different carmakers, including the new Porsche 911 GT3 and Cayman GT4, being pushed hard at the Nordschleife.
