BMW iNext Electric SUV’s Polygonal Steering Wheel Interacts With The Driver Like No Other

BMW has provided yet another glimpse inside their iNext electric crossover, revealing the steering wheel that has a very unusual polygonal shape, chosen after the company weighed in a large number of factors.

Its geometry is said to be perfect for switching between automated and active driving. By using the optical fibers integrated in the side sections, it sends color signals to drivers, informing them when they have to take over. Upon doing so, they will recognize the steering angle much easier, based on the position of the steering wheel.

The flattened lower part helps drivers avoid fatigue on long journeys by giving them extra legroom. Furthermore, the unique contours of the steering wheel, inspired by motor racing, optimize entry and seating comfort, and provide a better view of the instrument cluster, part of the wide curved display teased by the automaker at the end of spring. The tech feature is customizable, features touch control and non-reflective glass, and will be the dominating feature inside.

Described as their “new technology flagship”, the iNext will enter production from 2021. It will be very quick, with the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration taking around 4 seconds, as BMW previously announced, and will be able to travel for over 600 km (373 miles) in between chargers, which should provide extra peace of mind to owners with range anxiety.

The iNext will be BMW’s next major step into autonomous driving. It will get Level 3 self driving tech, which requires human presence ready to intervene at all times if necessary, and will be used to test Level 4 and Level 5, too, in the future, and those two don’t need any drivers in the cabin at all, to get from A to B.

First front lights and now steering wheel…just shows that Peugeot is on point with latest designs

      • ThatGuy

Alexxx my friend this is so true. BMW and Audi are notorious for jacking other manufacturers ideas and saying its world first. Bet they lie and say while it is similar its a world first that you can communicate with a steering wheel(a lie that is the car not just a button you press on the steering wheel) and the first with LED’s on the badge on the steering wheel and other marketing lies about full driver integration with the car via the steering wheel……..via blue tooth and connect systems, which is the car not steering wheel.

There are no dials, so im calling heads up display which they conveniently integrated with the steering wheel. Like cars have not been doing this since the dawn of time and theirs are crisp LED’s so its new. They “re-invented” the steering wheel……….

I smell a hot pile here, love their cars but please dont insult consumer BMW

To be honest I am bmw fan but often find that lots of things found on premium cars/models are stuff that can be found on non premium cars without bragging so much…I guess you have to market things more where you charge more for ordinary stuff.

          • ThatGuy

Yep i agree, marketing are using their tactics to persuade people into getting things they conjur up pure lies with.
I am a BMW fan too, that’s why it irked me, as they stopped the mambo jumbo a while back and have been growing alot, so much they dont need riff raff to sell. They the best premium car you can by, well that and Lexus, Lexus edging them out im my opinion, and i know according to all, Lexus are not better.

They are in comfort, but chassis and engine BMW are king, and premium feel, BMW steering wheel feel great, thus this article just makes BMW seem like the wanting….

BMW is all about the drive experience. Very few cars can match the outright ability of most if not all BMWs when it comes to driver involvement. Even the 2 Series vans are impressive. But … many companies seem to be moving in into the bimmer territory.
Everything else is not there strong suit at all.

          • ThatGuy

Driver feel, cannot be touched by other concerning BMW in my honest opinion, they are trying to come close but the feel of BMW chassis is unmatched. The others just feel like fast machines nothing more, obviously this excludes Porsche and the likes as they are made for it and are way out of budget.

Merce feels like a machine. VW and not Audi chassis feels good that front wheel drive good, with BMW coming into that market we will see if they can beat out VW, wait and see there too.

BMW standard cars drive so soft and comfortable, however Lexus seats and chassis just nick it there IMO. But they dont compete in the same sphere, so there is that too.

Peugeot and DS are my faves with interior design. I once rented a 308 SW and was wowed by the quality, presentation and overall luxus feel of the appointments.

I’m surprised automakers haven’t tried to trickle down what Ferrari and others are doing by putting all the stalk mounted controls on the wheel. Maybe they’re considerate of people with small hands that may not be able to use the buttons?
