The head of BMW’s M division, Markus Flasch, has made it clear that the car manufacturer has no plans to build any high-performance Touring estate models.

BMW M rivals, namely Mercedes-AMG and Audi Sport, both offer a number of different super-fast and powerful estate models such as the C 63 and E 63 wagons for Mercedes-AMG and the RS4 Avant and RS6 Avant from Audi Sport. It would, therefore, be quite logical for BMW M to follow suit.

However, during a recent interview with Car Magazine, Flasch said that the company’s go-fast SUVs, such as the new X3 M and X4 M fill the void of there not being any M-branded Touring models in its range.

Touring estates are not part of our M plan. If I asked customers in Austria, Switzerland or Germany they would probably give it the thumbs-up,” he said. “But, we are a global company and we have so many things to deal with on the powertrain side that we don’t go into products like this. This is what the SUVs are for.”

While this is disheartening, there are a host of exciting new BMW M models on the horizon.

Most notably, the latest-generation BMW M3 is just around the corner. It will be launched with the same new S58 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine as the X3 M and X4 M, available in both 480 hp form for the standard model and 510 hp for the Competition model.

“Drivetrain-wise, think about the M5’s all-wheel-drive system – we are able to put it in the M3 as well. It’ll be very similar. But we will also do rear-wheel drive cars, purer ones too and a manual stick shift,” Flasch added about the new M3.
