This Toyota Supra Mk4 Is Powered By A Turbo Cummins 5.9-Liter Diesel

The owner of an Mk4 Toyota Supra is part-way through an ambitious engine swap project that involved fitting a massive 5.9-liter Cummins diesel inline-six engine into the Japanese sports car.

Writing on social media, the owner, Ashley Whitsey, says he purchased the car in early April 2017 as a rolling shell. At one stage, his Supra was powered by the desirable twin-turbo 2JZ engine with a six-speed manual transmission but the enthusiast decided against trying to source a standard powertrain and has embarked on a slightly more unique project.

Whitsey has been detailing the ongoing build of the car for approximately two and a half years on the Retro Rides forums and it appears to be nearing completion. The photos of the vehicle absolutely boggle the mind.

The first thing to note about the diesel engine being installed into the Supra is that it’s absolutely massive and sitting next to the Toyota, actually looks too big. However, some creative tinkering has allowed the owner to mount the powertrain into the car’s engine bay. There has even been enough room to add a huge turbocharger.

Working alongside the 5.9-liter inline-six diesel engine is a ZF five-speed manual transmission and a Lexus LS400 rear differential with shortened axles. The vehicle doesn’t appear to be running just yet but the owner has ensured it looks the part by painting it matte black and slapping on a set of huge off-road wheels and tires. There’s even a large cage mounted to the roof.

Be sure to head over to the Retro Rides forum to check out the full build for yourself.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!

I came in here to say the exact same thing.

What an absolute waste of both the Supra, and of this engine.

Would be fun with a b58 engine in an mk4 🙂

  • Netsphere

this doesnt bother me as much as perverted german engineering inside the new supra.

    • Matt

      Uh why exactly?

      • Netsphere

it doesnt come standard form toyota

        • Matt

… Neither does a Cummins truck engine. At least the BMW motor is a great straight-six unit, not much to complain about apart from the fact Toyota didn’t design it.

          • Netsphere

thats my point, some joe shmo swapped it not a manufacturer. i know a lot of ppl like bmw for their reliable ovens, i see the trend keeps on going

          • Matt

Yeah you’re not making a lot of sense sorry.

  • yomama

How’d he fit the bottom half in there?

    I guess it’s still a I6 engine…

  • Vinny

Why? And Ashley? I hate guys who have lady names. When is a name considered a lady name? When 99.9999% of people who have that name are ladies.

    • blunt-o

Why not? That’s why I immigrated to Amerika!

      • Vinny

Why not? Perhaps it’s a fking diesel engine designed for trucks and not suitable for a performance/sports car? Have you driven a fking big diesel engined truck? I have. It’s designed for trucks for a reason, huge low-end torque with not much topend and a very very low redline. Maybe I should put one in my Cayman S, too? Pls stfu! 🙂

        • blunt-o

Your real name is Fredo not Vinny, right?

          • Vinny

My real name is Vicente Fox, but I changed it to Vinny because people kept mistaking me for that Mexican guy.

  • SteersUright

Im sure he’s having fun but damn, that aint too appealing.
