If you want to buy a large premium SUV but can’t afford to break the bank for a Bentley Bentayga or a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, your options right now are the BMW X7, the Lincoln Navigator, the Range Rover and the all-new Mercedes GLS.
An all-new Cadillac Escalade is also on its way, which means this bulky Merc definitely has its work cut out. However, according to reviewer Doug DeMuro, the GLS is very good at offering you ultra-modern features and a very comfortable ride.
Does this mean you should automatically purchase it over its rivals? Well, DeMuro feels that the 2020 GLS isn’t quite as interesting (he calls it a ‘Cool Factor’) as the BMW X7 or the latest Lincoln Navigator. He also has the GLS rated lower than the 2018 Range Rover (mostly because of aesthetics), which doesn’t really come as a surprise.

The model he sampled is the GLS 450 4Matic, which hs a price tag of $76,195 (including a $995 destination and delivery charge). While its equipment includes features such as the Premium Package, Lighting Package and Parking Assist Package as standard, it’s the MBUX dual-display setup that steals the show, especially since it comes with Augmented Reality Navigation, which apparently works like a charm.
In the end though, if you find the GLS’ styling not as great as the Range Rover’s, then you’ll always be more likely to purchase the latter instead of the so-called S-Class of SUVs.
