Acura’s Iconic Integra Type R Touring Car Returns To The Track For More Action

The legendary Acura Integra Type R race car of RealTime Racing has been restored back to its former glory, during which it dominated the Speed Touring Car Championship.

RealTime Racing competed with the Acura Integra Type R from its debut in 1997 through the 2002 season in the Speed Touring Car Championship, managing to capture 23 wins, five Drivers’ Championships between three drivers and four Manufacturer titles. Its record remains unbroken to this day.

The team was able to track down their original race car and purchase it. A full restoration followed, with the car stripped down to bare metal and brought back to its original championship-winning condition.

Turning a normal Acura Integra Type R into a race car didn’t require a lot of work; the team simply stripped down the car, added a full roll cage together with a new suspension and tuned the naturally aspirated B18 engine to rev up to 9,000 rpm from the factory 8,400 rpm. The manual gearbox remained stock, with no modifications.

The Acura Integra Type R has become an icon for the Japanese brand, praised by many as the greatest front-wheel drive performance car. It was so much more than a faster version of the Integra GS-R; the body came with extra welds for additional rigidity, aided by a factory-fitted strut bar while the suspension and brakes were specific to the Type R.

Pair that to the legendary B18C5 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that featured a hand-ported head, thinner valves and unique valve springs, stronger connecting rods and more. The output is rated at 195 HP and 130 lb-ft of torque while a close-ratio, five-speed manual transmission was the only option.

The restored RealTime Racing Acura Integra Type R participated at the WeatherTech International Challenge vintage race weekend at Road America, where it finished fourth in a field of more than 60 race cars.

“It was our first race back out with the Acura Integra Type R, and it was like we never skipped a beat. We had a great time!” said Cunningham, team owner of RealTime Racing. “There were some 60 cars in our group and only a few vehicles in a class above beat us, so it was a great day for RealTime and Acura and great to have the Type R back on track.”
